Today I would like to speak on verse 5 through 7 of Psalm 37;
5) commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this:
6) He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun.
7) Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.
Here, in a few short sentences, we have a guideline of how we ought to live life. Beloved, whatever dream you wish to see manifest, whatever secret desire stirs in your heart, we must first commit their path to the Lord. Committing something to the Lord simply means we relinquish our own power and fully surrender it to a higher power above all other powers, the Lord Jesus Christ. It means to submit our faith and our trust to God who knows better than us how to bring forth his promises.
There are two paths which will lead our days. Either faith or that of fear. Faith is a process whereas fear is instantaneous. Faith is an intentional condition of our mind and actions and fear is a rash impulse and reaction. Daily we make decisions from either of these and only if we choose faith will our commitment to the Lord lead to his purposes. We all know God’s hand oftentimes appears to move very slow and we, as a people, don’t like slow. We wish to see things move swiftly in our favor and should they not, we may be tempted to lean on the pathway of fear where our actions follow.
You see, righteousness of the Lord is a tempered nature transformed in man and the wicked are swift to carry out their schemes. We operate from faith to faith and move from glory to glory and these things occur, as we commit our ways to God. Learning to be still is not a word in our vocabulary which we readily embrace. Why? Because we believe if we are still, nothing is happening and time doesn’t afford us to be still. There is a difference between the sudden-lies of God and man’s rash behavior to make things happen. When we follow God and wait on his leading and timing, things will blossom as roses but if we choose to operate in our own timing, we will encounter its thorn.
When you don’t know how to handle a situation, commit it to the Lord. When you don’t understand how anything good could possibly come from disaster, commit your thoughts to the Lord. There will always be things we don’t understand no matter how long we’ve walked with God but he is always faithful to bring the positive forth as we continue to pursue our commitment to him. Today, as you go about your day, every worry or nagging fear you have, commit to the Lord. Every dream and project you are working on, commit to the Lord and recommit over and over again until every thought is subject to God and loses its strength to fight.
