Today I would like to talk about when our faith grows tired. It can happen and most of us would agree unless, of course, you are spiritually above others. This is depicted in the reading of the psalms where faith and hope struggled when despair took its place.
We could profess a strong and sturdy faith one day and the next we are looking at a pile of ashes wondering where it has gone. The truth is, there is a gradual build-up that occurs within our spirit and it could take just one thing to push us over the edge. Every day we live, there is something or someone that is trying to chip away at our faith and though it can be subtle and nothing we are ever aware of, it could happen. James chapter 1 speaks of faith when doubt creeps in and the results therein, and of course, we have the book of Hebrews which is all about faith.
Let me preface this post to say this: when we question the ways of God or why our circumstances, this does not mean faith has waivered. Job questioned and Jesus as well when he asked from the cross, why his Father had forsaken him. Our faith is never defined by what we say rather by what it is we do.
Proverbs 3:5: Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.
Beloved, if we leaned on our natural understanding we would be on a constant fishing expedition looking to find any faith. When something so devastating happens in our life or whatever it is that pushes us over the edge, we are left with what we believe God is all about. Where is his kindness and where is his love? If he were who he said he was, he would never allow this or that to happen. We then find ourselves in a raging storm of doubt.
I’ve been there have you? I could tell you from my own experience when faith flees to the hills, there is still a nugget of hope that clings to the finger of God and will never let go. When we struggle with faith, we must truly believe that he will never give us more than we could handle. Whatever you are facing today, you could handle because God is with you and will not allow you to drown or cast your faith aside.
I’ve listed a few suggestions when faith grows weary what we could do.
1• Continue to read scriptures about faith and hope because there is supernatural power in the word and it will find that one nugget that you held onto and strengthen you.
2• Talk to someone who has been there and could help instruct you in your crisis (someone with spiritual wisdom and insight.)
3• You could find a support group who has or is going through the same thing as you where sharing is both healing and empowering.
4• Still talk to God about your feelings, your hurt anger and everything else it won’t shock his ears. Being honest with the Lord is the first step in recovering.
Like any storm, the storms of shifting faith will pass too. When there is a natural outbreak, the winds blow, debris flies in the air and could cause our eyes to see only the fog that has infiltrated what was once clear vision. Even when the rains still downpour, there is a time we will be able to see more clearly and so it is with our faith. God will always sustain us in the storm even when we cannot see him any longer.
Today I pray for you if you are in the storm and your faith appears to have washed out to sea, know that God walked on water and covers your weakness and mine. There is no valley so steep where his hand could never reach down and lift you from. When you are at a loss for words and all you could barely utter is “Jesus”, its okay thats all he needs to hear and he will help you.
We must know God’s help is not always in our thinking or how we perceive him to help us through. If you are a parent you know that helping your child rarely comes in the way they would understand. If they fell and took a bruise and cut, they may look to you for comfort by giving them a toy or a snack where you may first attend to their physical need. The Lord will attend to us every moment we are in need but rarely in the ways we would expect. He is still faithful in our storms and his mercy will carry us when our faith is weak.
